Gardeners Farringdon Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Farringdon is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, visitors, and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. Health and safety is an integral part of how we plan, manage, and deliver our services, and we expect everyone who works with us to share this commitment.
Policy Objectives
The main objectives of this Health and Safety policy are to prevent injury and ill health, protect property and the environment, and promote a culture of safety awareness across all aspects of our work. We will take all reasonably practicable steps to manage risks arising from our operations and to ensure that health and safety considerations are given equal priority with quality, service, and cost.
Management Responsibilities
The management team at Gardeners Farringdon has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this policy. Management will ensure that suitable resources are made available to manage health and safety risks, that responsibilities are clearly allocated, and that appropriate supervision and monitoring are in place.
Management responsibilities include identifying hazards associated with gardening work, such as the use of machinery, manual handling, working at height, and the use of chemicals. We will develop and review safe systems of work to address these hazards, and ensure that all staff are familiar with relevant procedures before starting any task.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must follow the training and instructions provided, use equipment correctly, report hazards and near-misses promptly, and cooperate fully with all health and safety measures implemented by Gardeners Farringdon.
Employees must never misuse or tamper with equipment, guards, or safety devices, and must immediately report any defects in tools, machinery, or personal protective equipment to their supervisor so that appropriate action can be taken.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Gardeners Farringdon undertakes risk assessments for all significant activities, including lawn care, hedge cutting, tree work, planting, weed control, waste handling, and seasonal maintenance tasks. These assessments identify potential hazards, evaluate the level of risk, and specify suitable control measures to reduce risk to an acceptable level.
Safe systems of work are developed on the basis of these assessments. They may include the use of personal protective equipment, selection of appropriate tools and machinery, access control to active work areas, restricted working during adverse weather, and clear communication with clients and the public where work may affect shared spaces.
Use of Tools, Machinery, and Equipment
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered equipment, such as lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and other specialist machinery. All equipment must be inspected regularly, maintained according to manufacturer instructions, and removed from service if faults are identified.
Employees are required to follow operating instructions at all times, including safe start-up and shut-down procedures, correct handling and transportation of equipment, and the isolation of power sources when cleaning, inspecting, or adjusting machinery.
Chemical and Substance Safety
Where gardening activities involve the use of chemicals or other potentially hazardous substances, Gardeners Farringdon will assess the risks and put in place measures to control exposure. This may include selecting safer alternatives, using the smallest effective quantities, providing appropriate storage and labelling, and ensuring correct disposal.
Employees must follow all instructions relating to the handling, application, and storage of such substances, including the use of recommended personal protective equipment and adherence to safety data sheet guidance.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Farringdon will provide suitable personal protective equipment where identified by risk assessment. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, high visibility clothing, protective clothing, and respiratory protection where necessary.
Employees are responsible for wearing the protective equipment provided, caring for it properly, and reporting any loss, damage, or defect immediately so that it can be replaced or repaired.
Manual Handling and Working Posture
Many gardening activities involve lifting, carrying, and repetitive movements. To reduce the risk of injury, Gardeners Farringdon will provide guidance on safe manual handling techniques and encourage the use of mechanical aids or team lifting wherever reasonably practicable.
Employees must avoid unsafe lifting practices, request assistance with heavy or awkward loads, and take regular breaks where tasks involve prolonged or repetitive movements.
Working Outdoors and Environmental Conditions
Our work is largely carried out outdoors, sometimes in changing or challenging weather conditions. Gardeners Farringdon will plan work schedules with regard to heat, cold, rain, wind, and lighting conditions, and may postpone or adjust tasks where environmental risks cannot be adequately controlled.
Employees are expected to wear appropriate clothing for outdoor conditions, stay hydrated, take rest breaks as required, and remain vigilant for hazards such as slippery surfaces, uneven ground, traffic, or restricted visibility.
Communication, Training, and Competence
Gardeners Farringdon will provide health and safety induction for new employees and ongoing training relevant to their roles. Training may cover topics such as equipment operation, safe use of chemicals, manual handling, first aid awareness, emergency procedures, and working safely in gardens and outdoor spaces.
We will maintain records of training and competence and review these periodically, especially when new equipment, techniques, or services are introduced.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near-misses, and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management without delay. Gardeners Farringdon will investigate such events to identify underlying causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Emergency arrangements, including first aid provision and procedures for contacting emergency services, will be communicated to employees. Where appropriate, site-specific emergency arrangements will be agreed before work begins.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
Gardeners Farringdon is committed to continually improving its health and safety performance. We will monitor our practices, review incident data, seek feedback from employees, and update risk assessments and procedures as necessary.
This Health and Safety policy will be reviewed regularly and revised to reflect changes in legislation, guidance, working practices, or the nature of our gardening and maintenance services. All employees will be informed of significant changes and are expected to familiarise themselves with updated requirements.
By working together and following this policy, we aim to maintain a safe and healthy environment for everyone involved in, or affected by, the gardening services provided by Gardeners Farringdon.
